South Africa has undeniably developed into one of the most crime-ridden countries in the world, obviously due to various factors. The biggest cause of this is the inability of law enforcement agencies to curb crime at its lowest levels. The days when the South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted routine foot and vehicle patrols in communities seem to be forever gone. Individuals and communities no longer feel safe to move freely in the streets, and this also applies to their own homes. South Africans have been forced to fortify their residences to such an extent that no one can enter or exit. The fact that their homes are so secure creates a false sense of safety among people, as they eventually have to face the outside world again, where the danger is even greater. It is precisely when individuals are in public that they must be aware of their surroundings. This is called situational awareness.
